Please note that this role does not involve the use of British Sign Language (BSL).
The locations for this role vary. Specific locations that are suitable for the volunteer and that meet the needs of the service can be discussed during the interview. All locations will be in the borough of Hackney or within our head office in Old Street, EC1Y.
Volunteering times also vary and can be discussed during the interview but volunteers must be willing to commit to at least 2.5 hours per month.
- Visit service users within their homes, residential/day care centres and walk-in clinics
- Undertake basic maintenance on hearing aids such as re-tubing and battery replacement
- Sign post other agencies that may be beneficial to the service user, such as the Sensory Impairment Team
- Promoting for the service by means of leaflet distribution and/or attending service presentation/talks
- Monitor the number visits carried out and feedback to Volunteer Co-coordinator
- Promote the work of Action on Hearing Loss
- knowledge of or willingness to learn about issues affecting deaf and hard of hearing people, particularly older people
- friendly, reliable and approachable manner
- ability to listen to questions and to answer appropriately;
- happy to work with a wide range of people especially the elderly;
Support and supervision
Regular support will be given by your Volunteer Co-ordinator, especially in the early stages of your role as you settle in. You will also receive informal support from other Action on Hearing Loss volunteers as you work together and attend each other’s sessions.
You will need to be able to travel locally to different places, whether by car or public transport. Expenses will be reimbursed, according to the Action on Hearing Loss Travel and Subsistence Policy.
- Training in Understanding Hearing Loss
- Training in basic hearing aid support and maintenance
Both of which lead to an Open College Network certificate.
