ABM University Health Board in South Wales contributes to the undergraduate teaching and training of medical students from Cardiff and Swansea Universities. As part of a series of four linked sessions on the theme of ‘difficult communication’, Action on Hearing Loss was contacted to contribute to some small group teaching.

Dr Robert Colgate, a Consultant Psychiatrist at Princess of Wales Hospital, helped to organise and coordinate the training sessions, believing these skills to be an important tool in improving relations between aspiring doctors and patients who are deaf or have a hearing loss.

Action on Hearing Loss provided tailored training sessions in deaf awareness for around 60 third year medical students training at the Princess of Wales Hospital, to help them understand the difficulties that deaf and hard of hearing people face every day.

With effective communication being a top priority for any medic, Dr Colgate described the deaf awareness training as a “revelation” and found that it had improved the confidence of the medical students in communicating with people who are deaf or have a hearing loss. It has also substantially improved attitudes towards people who are deaf or have a hearing loss by improving communication and promoting inclusion.

Senior trainer Tanvir Ahmed was delighted with the results saying that the students were willing to “go out of their comfort zone to involve themselves fully in the training. They were dedicated and enthusiastic throughout the sessions.”

Dr Colgate added, “I strongly recommend Action on Hearing Loss for such quality training; a strong resource that has clearly benefited our students.”
