Learning some basic British Sign Language (BSL) can help break down barriers and create a friendly and accessible environment.
Our Start to Sign course will provide you with basic BSL skills to communicate with customers, clients and colleagues who are Deaf and use BSL. This is a fantastic introduction to BSL, giving you the opportunity to learn more than 150 signs in a day.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
- recognise and apply basic grammatical structures in British Sign Language (BSL)
- use appropriate greetings
- communicate your job title/role in BSL
- introduce yourself using fingerspelling confidently
- hold a brief conversation with a Deaf person using basic sign language vocabulary.
Staff from First Great Western Trains attended on our Start to Sign course to learn BSL. Read how it’s helped them to better communicate with Deaf passengers here.
How is the course delivered?
Our Start to Sign course is delivered by an experienced trainer whose first or preferred language is BSL. Each of our sign language courses takes place in one working day, usually 10am to 5pm, with an hour for lunch.
This sign language course for beginners is Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accredited, so all course participants will receive a certificate of attendance showing the CPD points achieved (three points for the half day course and six points for the full day course). Participants will also receive an information pack.
