      Level 1 Award in BSL

      Do you work, or come into contact with, British Sign Language users at your business or organisation?

      By learning British Sign Language (BSL), you can help make the world a more friendly and accessible place for people who use it as their first or preferred language.

      Our Signature accredited BSL level 1 course will enable you to communicate with Deaf people using BSL on a range of topics using simple everyday language.

      By the end of the course, you should be able to:

      • understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL
      • take part in simple, predictable conversations in BSL
      • give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL
      • give and follow simple statements or descriptions in BSL

      How is this course delivered?

      The Level 1 Award in BSL will run for six hours a day for 10 days. Once you have completed the course, you can progress on to the Level 2 Certificate in BSL.

      Qualification structure

      The Level 1 Award in BSL qualification is divided into three units – to achieve the full Level 1 qualification, candidates must pass all units:

      BSL 101  Introduction to BSL 
      BSL 102 Conversational BSL 
      BSL 103  BSL at school, college or work 

      Each of the above unit assessments will be videoed and assessed externally by Signature (external link, opens new window).
