Posted on: Thursday, June 7, 2012 by Tony Kinson

Manchester City crestIf you are deaf or have a hearing loss, going on a guided tour or attending a sporting event can be difficult unless there is a guide who is deaf aware or uses BSL.

In this blog, Chris Holmes from Manchester City Football Club and Jude Nortier from Manchester Deaf Centre talk about their new BSL tours and commitment to making the club accessible for fans who are deaf or have a hearing loss.

Pilot scheme is first of its kind for hearing impaired supporters in Premier League

“At Manchester City Football Club, we’ve just announced the launch of a pilot series of tours to be conducted with a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter provided by the Manchester Deaf Centre alongside the club’s official tour guides. The tours will take fans around the Etihad Stadium and the Director’s Box.

We wanted to show our commitment to fans that are deaf or have a hearing loss and the tours were designed with this group in mind. The BSL tours are actually the first to be introduced by a Premier League club.

Our aim is to make Etihad Stadium as accessible as possible to all our supporters, so we hope the pilot BSL tours will prove popular. If successful, we’d like to make them a regular occurrence.

The tours will be taking place on 15 and 29 July, lasting one hour. There are two tours on each day; the early tour will start at 11:00 and the later tour at 13:00.”

Jude Nortier, Operations Manager at the Manchester Deaf Centre, welcomed the launch: “It is a great to see a Premier League club like City looking at new ways to reach out to its hearing impaired fans beyond match days, and we are really pleased to be working with the club to make this scheme a reality.”

Bookings for the tours are now being taken, with further information available on the club’s website.
