Our Specialist Employability Support Service operates across Scotland and provides person-centred support for jobseekers who are Deaf or have hearing loss.
People receiving Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) or Universal Credit are referred by their job centre to the service which is contracted by the UK Government’s Department of Work and Pensions in partnership with Doncaster Deaf Trust.
Our employment adviser is fluent in British Sign Language (BSL) and can build the confidence of people using our service by supporting them to enhance their job searching, CV development, application form completing and interview skills.
We help to ensure that potential employers realise their need to comply with equality legislation by providing BSL interpreters, electronic note-takers or other communication support which meet the individual needs of people being interviewed for a job.
We also advise businesses about the availability of the UK Government’s Access to Work scheme, which can help pay towards the costs of communication support and assistive equipment. We can provide deaf awareness sessions or training to help staff to understand how they can best communicate with a colleague who is Deaf or has hearing loss as well as the ‘reasonable adjustments’ they should make.
