      Aged Veterans Project

The Aged Veterans Project is our Northern Ireland-wide service supporting older Armed Forces veterans with their hearing loss and tinnitus

What does the Aged Veterans Project do?

The Aged Veterans Project offers information and support to veterans with hearing loss and tinnitus – and their families and carers – throughout Northern Ireland.

We focus on working with veterans born before 1950, although all requesting support will be given assistance.

The project is funded by the Chancellor, using LIBOR Funds. It runs until 2020.

Why do veterans with hearing loss need our support?

Hearing loss is a common health issue in the Armed Forces. Many veterans have been repeatedly exposed to loud noise from small arms fire, artillery, engines and other machinery, and explosions.

The 2014 Lost Voices report, collated by the Royal British Legion with our support, found that veterans under the age of 75 are around three and a half times more likely to experience hearing loss than the general population.

“Veterans under 75 are 3 1/2 times more likely to experience hearing loss”

      What do we offer?

Our Aged Veterans Project worker offers information and support in easy-to-access community settings – and in people’s homes throughout Northern Ireland. We make sure veterans, their families, and their carers get the right support for their hearing loss and tinnitus.

      Specifically, we offer:

      • basic hearing checks
      • information and support
      • support before and after hearing aids have been fitted
      • equipment to trial
      • talks to community groups
      • referrals to other sources of support
      • volunteering opportunities.
