As she is largely bed bound, Mary doesn’t go out at all and the only other people she sees on a daily basis are her carers who do not have a lot of time to spend with her.
Her hearing loss can also make communication with them difficult. Despite all this, she remains remarkably upbeat and enjoys a joke and a laugh during Carmel’s weekly visit.
She said about Carmel, “I’d just like to thank you, you couldn’t have introduced me to a more wonderful woman. We have some great chats, we’re both fed up with Brexit. I love to laugh and Carmel makes me laugh.”
As she doesn’t go outside at all now and is in bed most of the day with only the TV for company, Mary feels the time Carmel spends with her each week is very special and she looks forward to it greatly.
She also likes to reminisce about her earlier life with her husband Fred when they both went dancing in the Floral Hall and the Plaza in Belfast and Carmel loves to hear all her stories.
