National charity Action on Hearing Loss (formerly RNID) opened a new services base in the centre of Derry / Londonderry today (Wednesday 6 December 2017) to extend its services for people who are deaf, have a hearing loss or tinnitus into the North West.

Service users, staff and volunteers opened the event by singing carols outside the new office in the Embassy building at Waterloo Place.

McCallion MP for Foyle and Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Councillor Maolíosa McHugh officially opened the office at 1.00pm. This was followed by a tour of the new facility and the chance to meet some of the charity’s local service users, volunteers and staff.

Jackie White, Northern Ireland Director for Action on Hearing Loss said: “This event today marks a milestone in our development and means that we will be able to benefit even more people with hearing loss, deafness or tinnitus living in the North West.”

Mayor McHugh said he himself had a hearing difficulty.  He said: “I am very aware and sensitive to the issues and how important it is to have this type of facility in Derry to provide for the people of the North West.”

There are approximately 16,800 people with some form of hearing loss in the Foyle area alone, many of whom will now be able to benefit from a range of support services provided by the charity. These include comprehensive information resources; specialist employment advice; practical hearing aid support; befriending support for older people with hearing loss; and a wide range of specialist equipment which can be borrowed for a trial period. Anyone concerned about their hearing, or who has a hearing loss is encouraged to drop into the new Action on Hearing Loss office for support.
