This research report examines the availability and effectiveness of transitions support services for young deaf people in Northern Ireland.

The Opening Doors research, carried out by Queens University Belfast in 2014, explored the experiences of young deaf people in making the transition from school to further and higher education, training and employment. It also assessed the range of support services being offered to young deaf people in transition.

The findings identified a number of common issues, including limited access to information on the range of options available after leaving school; limited access to qualified communication support workers which impacts on the level of inclusion of young deaf people; a need for sustainable and co-ordinated planning for transition; a lack of confidence among young deaf people which impacted n their school and post-school experiences; insufficient deaf awareness among teachers, professionals providing transitions support and employers; limited participation in decision-making about their future choices; and social isolation experienced by young deaf people in school and in work.
