Communication

People with hearing loss communicate in a variety of ways. For an overview, you can start with our leaflets Communication support services, British Sign Language and Learning how to lipread.

You can find out in our factsheets about the many different types of communication support available. BSL is likely to be the first language of people who are profoundly deaf - our factsheets tells you more about working with a sign language interpreter. Others may benefit from a lipspeaker, notetaker or speech-to-text reporter.

You can also order free factsheets and leaflets from our helpline.
