Nicola Sturgeon MSP joins Action on Hearing Loss celebrations at New Hear to Help launch

Posted on 03/10/2011

Nicola Sturgeon MSP with Delia Henry, Director Action on Hearing Loss ScotlandGlasgow Govan MSP and Health Secretary, Nicola Sturgeon has joined the centenary celebrations for Action on Hearing Loss as they launch a new ’Hear to Help’ drop-in in Pollokshields. The ‘Hear to Help’ project has been set up to offer vital support to hearing aid users in the Southside. Drop-ins will run on the first Tuesday of every month at the Nan McKay Memorial Community Hall, End of St John’s Road, Pollokshields. The next session is on 1st November.

Trained volunteers some of whom have hearing loss themselves, will be on hand to give tips on how to maintain and adjust NHS hearing aids. Visitors will be shown how to insert their hearing aids, replace tubing and batteries, as well as being provided with advice on equipment that can make life easier in the workplace and at home. This essential support will help people hear more clearly and improve their communication with friends, family and colleagues

Giving her support to the new drop-in Nicola Sturgeon MSP said, “I wish everyone involved with the ‘Hear to Help’ project well and am sure that the Pollokshields drop-in will be a great success. I am delighted that another Hear to Help drop-in is opening in Glasgow as it provides a great service to hearing aid users across the city.

“The ‘Hear to Help’ project not only offers people practical support but also breaks down the sense of isolation that many people face as a result of hearing loss. I have seen the work done by ‘Hear to Help’ volunteers and I applaud their knowledge and their commitment to the project. ”

Action on Hearing Loss Scotland Director, Delia Henry, said, “Getting used to a hearing aid can be difficult and takes time. At our drop-in events, our volunteers will be showing people how simple adjustments and maintenance can improve the performance of their hearing aids and transform their hearing so they can live a full and active life. In the weeks ahead, we will be working to expand our Hear to Help service to reach hearing aid users in communities throughout the city.
