Exploring the barriers faced by people who are deaf or have hearing loss when accessing public services.

“Very few people know how to speak and listen to a deaf person – and often show their impatience.” Survey respondent

This research identifies the key barriers faced by people who are deaf or have hearing loss when accessing services in Wales. The research looked specifically at public services, including: public transport, access to arts, entertainment and leisure activities as well as employment and training opportunities. Simple changes could help to make a big difference; for example, by providing deaf awareness training to staff, ensuring loop and infrared systems are installed and working effectively, as well as improving awareness amongst organisations of their legal requirements under the Equality Act 2010 (previously the Disability Discrimination Act).
