      Start to Sign at Schools

As a teacher, do you or your colleagues work with pupils whose main language is British Sign Language (BSL)?

Learning some British Sign Language (BSL) can help break down barriers and create a friendly and accessible environment.

Our Start to Sign training course will provide you with basic BSL skills to communicate with pupils who are deaf and use BSL. It is a fantastic introduction to BSL, giving you the opportunity to learn more than 150 signs in a day.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

      • Recognise and apply basic grammatical structures in BSL
      • Use appropriate greetings
      • Communicate your job title / role in BSL
      • Introduce yourself using fingerspelling
      • Hold a brief conversation with a person who is deaf using everyday vocabulary

      How is the course delivered?

The Start to Sign course is delivered by an experienced trainer whose first or preferred language is BSL. The course duration is one working day, usually 10:00 to 17:00, with an hour for lunch.  A half day course is also available.

      Certification

The course is Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accredited, so participants  will receive a certificate of attendance showing the CPD points achieved (3 points for the half day course and 6 points for the full day course). Participants will also receive an information pack.
