      Disability Sport Wales

Disability Sport Wales provides community participation opportunities for disabled children and adults, as well as supporting talented athletes on their path to World Championships and the Paralympics.

They also have an Education and Training Team that supports the other programme areas, writes and develops training courses on Disability Inclusion, and deploys a team of tutors to deliver across Wales.

As a disability organisation, Disability Sport Wales wants to lead the way in accessibility, and to make sure they cater for people who are deaf or have a hearing loss as effectively as possible. By undertaking deaf awareness training, they added to their own skill base dealing with people with various disabilities.

Delegates who took part in the deaf awareness training found that combining the information given on the course and the basic British Sign Language (BSL) learned gave them more confidence when communicating with people who are deaf or have a hearing loss. Tanvir Ahmed, our Senior Trainer, found feedback from the delegates to be very positive, saying they all “thoroughly enjoyed it” and found it “useful and refreshing”.

Lindsey Bridgeman, Education and Training Officer for Disability Sport Wales said, “The training was absolutely worthwhile – the more people that attend deaf awareness training, the far better people with hearing loss will be treated and accepted."

Our training has helped to solve a variety of accessibility issues across many different organisations, providing support for new and existing staff and encouraging businesses to meet the requirements of the Equality Act 2010.
