Information for volunteers who are deaf or hard of hearing

Being deaf or hard of hearing is not a barrier to becoming a volunteer. Many of our volunteers are people who are deaf, have a hearing loss, and this gives you a unique insight into the issues faced by the people who use Action on Hearing Loss services.

You can make a big difference to the lives of other people who have a hearing loss. This could be by working with Action on Hearing Loss on one of our projects or working with other voluntary or community organisations.

Becoming a volunteer

If you would like to volunteer with another organisation we have developed information to help them recruit and support volunteers who are deaf and have a hearing loss. It contains information on:

  • barriers to volunteering for people with a hearing loss
  • tips on recruiting volunteers with a hearing loss
  • advice on interviewing volunteers who have a hearing loss
  • making information accessible
  • making their training accessible
  • information on deafness and hearing loss
  • tips on inducting volunteers with a hearing loss
  • details of where to get communication support.
