Electronic music event Jika Jika! encourages clubbers to protect their hearing

Charity Action on Hearing Loss (formerly RNID) is delighted to announce its recent partnership with Derry/Londonderry based electronic music event Jika Jika!, to raise awareness of the risks loud music poses to hearing.

The popular music event began as an outlet for underground house and techno music in 2000 and exists to bring music lovers and like-minded individuals together. Past guests have included Sven Vath, Danny Tenaglia, Sasha, John Digweed and Ben Klock, to name a few.

James Crossan, Director at Jika Jika!, DJ and music lover, is determined to enable people to enjoy live music whilst protecting their hearing. Over exposure to loud music can have permanent consequences, potentially leading to the development of tinnitus and premature hearing loss.

James said: "Hearing is a very important tool for all DJs and electronic music lovers. The team behind Jika Jika are fully aware of the damage and risk surrounding being exposed to loud music and we all use hearing protection during our events. However we feel that a lot of artists and the general public who attend our events are not fully aware of these risks… and we want to change that.

Noise-induced hearing loss and damage is preventable and we feel that with our partnership with Action On Hearing Loss we can help make people aware of the importance of looking after you hearing when clubbing.”

The company will be holding a series of events to support Action on Hearing Loss, with a percentage of the ticket sale going to the charity. Jika Jika! have raised over £1000 for the charity so far, with more events coming up in February, March and April. Whilst enjoying the music, Jika Jika! will also be raising awareness about protecting your hearing.

Jackie White, Director at Action on Hearing Loss Norther Ireland said: “In December we opened our new services base in Derry/ Londonderry and we’re delighted to have the support of a local company to help raise awareness of hearing loss and the services we offer in this area. If anyone has any questions about their hearing we would invite them to contact us for support.”

Hearing Loss affects one in six of the population, including approximately 17,980 people in the Derry/ Londonderry District.
